In 1999, the Department of Languages and Literature was established at the National Institute of Fine Art and Design named after Kamoliddin Behzod. Initially, the department functioned within the Faculty of Art Studies; however, it was later reorganized into a general academic department providing instruction to students of all faculties of the institute. According to the decision of the Academic Council, the department was removed from the faculty structure and placed under the direct supervision of the Vice-Rector for Academic and Educational Affairs. In 2020, the department was renamed the “Department of Uzbek and Foreign Languages.” Currently, the department operates within the Faculty of Art Studies and Applied Arts.

The main objective of the department is to enhance students’ creative, cultural, and intellectual development, as well as to develop their oral and written communication skills in Uzbek, Russian, and foreign languages, and to improve their literacy. In addition, an important task of the department is to familiarize students with the finest works of world and Uzbek literature.

At present, the department provides instruction at the undergraduate level. The educational process is organized based on a credit-modular system. The department offers the following core subjects: foreign language (English), Uzbek language, Russian language, history of world and Uzbek literature, and history of Uzbek literature.
