In 1991, the Tashkent Theatre and Art Institute named after A.N. Ostrovsky was renamed the Tashkent State Institute of Arts named after M. Uygur. In 1997, the fields of fine arts and design were separated from this institute, and the National Institute of Fine Art and Design named after Kamoliddin Behzod was established under the Academy of Arts of Uzbekistan. In 1999, based on the Department of “Restoration of Architectural Decor and Interior Design,” two independent departments were formed — the Department of Design and the Department of Restoration of Architectural Monuments. In 2019, the educational program “Design: Industrial Design” was introduced on the basis of the Department of Design.

The main objective of the department is to train highly qualified specialists by integrating modern design approaches with national and global design practices. To achieve this, students are taught contemporary design disciplines through practical examples, develop design skills by working on various projects, and acquire proficiency in the effective use of graphic, 3D, and digital software. In addition, the department aims to foster creative thinking, the ability to develop design solutions, aesthetic awareness, and a responsible approach to assigned tasks.

The department offers the following core subjects: fundamentals of design, interior design, industrial product design, composition and color theory, materials science, architectural and design graphics, exterior and interior perspective, history of architecture and interior design, design theory and methodology, building structures, ergonomics, architectural design, design of objects using Autodesk software, fundamentals of BIM technologies, artistic construction, model making, environmental design, interior and exterior visualization, bionics and parametric design, engineering and design projects, modeling and prototyping, building engineering systems, and cost estimation.
