In 1966, the Department of Monumental Painting was established at the Tashkent Institute of Theatre and Fine Arts named after A.N. Ostrovsky. In accordance with the Decree of the First President of the Republic of Uzbekistan dated March 11, 1997, this department currently operates as one of the departments within the Faculty of Fine Arts of the National Institute of Fine Art and Design named after Kamoliddin Behzod.

Among the first faculty members of the department were such artists as O.K. Tatevosyan (Head of Department), R.A. Ahmedov, and V.A. Riftin.

Over the years, the teaching staff of the Department of Monumental Painting has included distinguished specialists such as Ch.T. Akhmarov, V.I. Zhmakin, V.I. Drigin, V.I. Burmakin, O.M. Muinov, A.F. Mazitov, Yu.V. Chernyshov, R. Kryukova, M.A. Abidjanova, Erkin Nazarov, Ozod Khabibulin, and B. Boboyev.

From 1969 to 1972, the department included among its staff the People’s Artist of Uzbekistan, Academician, Professor Chingiz Akhmarov.

From 1966 to 1992, the department was headed by one of its first leaders, Valentin Ivanovich Zhmakin.

The department offers the following disciplines: drawing, painting, decorative painting, color science, fundamentals of composition, composition, work in material in monumental painting, design and model-making, techniques and technology of monumental painting, artistic solutions in monumental painting, artistic solutions in drawing, composition of monumental art, work in material, as well as fundamentals of architecture and composition.
